Railway Volunteer

We’re looking for friendly, outgoing volunteers to assist with all aspects of running the 7 ¼ gauge Miniature Railway at the Museum.

The railway runs on most event days, first Sundays of the month (subject to weather) and for school and private parties subject to availability of volunteers.

The railway is 100% supported by volunteers who, as well as providing crew to operate the trains, also undertake all the track, station and rolling stock maintenance. Many also devote time to the core Museum tasks as time allows.

What’s involved?

In this role you will:

  • Learn about all aspects of running a railway
  • As a new volunteer, be trained to cover the Ticket Office, Platform Attendant, Station Master and Guard roles
  • Have the opportunity to progress to Signalling, ‘Non-Steam Driver’, ‘Passed Cleaner’ and ‘Steam Driver’
  • Be able to get involved in supporting the maintenance of the railway ensuring the track is serviceable, signalling equipment works and the rolling stock is maintained.

Why get involved?

  • Receive a full induction and training relevant to the role, including health and safety
  • Gain skills and enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces
  • Join a team of like-minded people
  • Access to other volunteering roles and opportunities at the Museum.

Skills

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly and approachable
  • Enjoys heritage and railways
  • Interfaces well with the public of all ages
  • Is able to provide one reference.

What is the time commitment?

You can choose to volunteer to assist with train running to support some of the school groups on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays during term time from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm, and on the first Sunday of each month, Thursdays during school holidays plus any event days.  On days that we run on steam the day can be longer.  Maintenance activities normally take place on Tuesdays.

You will have a name contact from the Museum railway team in addition to the Museum Manager.
