Garden Volunteer

Gardening can be a great way to stay active and enhance your wellbeing in nature. We’re looking for volunteer gardeners to help us care for the Museum gardens and grounds.
The Museum of Power reopened to the public in 2024 with large grounds, river and woodland. The redevelopment included beautiful borders created by our garden volunteers surrounding the new visitor entrance. Join the team to be part of the next phase of development, thinking about how people will use our wider outdoor spaces in the future.
You might be entirely new to gardening or a seasoned professional, you just need an interest in gardening and happy doing physical work outside. This is a great opportunity to build your knowledge of gardening and meet people with similar interests.
What’s involved?
In this role you will:
- Take part in seasonal planting and growing of our borders and planters
- Help maintain the gardens, including weeding, pruning, watering and clearing leaves
- Use landscaping equipment to cut back hedges and grass
- Work with other volunteers to research and implement environmentally sustainable approaches to gardening
- Contribute ideas to the annual planting group and development of our outdoor spaces
Why get involved?
- Receive a full induction and training relevant to the role, including health and safety
- Learn new skills and enhance your wellbeing
- Be paired with a buddy to help you settle in
- Participate in monthly Garden Team meetings and an annual Planting meeting in February
- Visit other museums and public gardens with like minded people
We are looking for someone who is:
- Happy working outdoors
- Passionate about gardening or horticulture and willing to learn
- The work can be physical but a range of tasks are often available
- Able to provide one reference
What is the time commitment?
We host a gardening group on Wednesdays 9:30am – 2:00pm when you can work with other volunteers. Alternatively you can drop in and garden independently for as long as you like on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays between 9:30am – 4:00pm.
You will have a named contact from the Museum who supports the Garden Volunteer Team, this is Debbie Thomas, the Museum Manager. There will also be a Duty Manager on site every day, either Debbie or James Gulleford, the Assistant Museum Manager.
