Events Volunteer: Family Events

We’re looking for volunteers who are friendly and enjoy working with children to help families have a great day out at the Museum. You might want to volunteer at one event or a few of them.
The Museum of Power reopened to the public in 2024 after a £1.9 million redevelopment. The Museum runs a busy events programme to animate its building and grounds, provide entertaining experiences for families and generate important funds for the Museum charity.
This is a great opportunity for someone who only has a short amount of time but wants to do something enjoyable and make other people smile. Maybe you are able to help us prepare for and set up the activities before the event, or perhaps you have a few hours to help on the day. We’re looking for volunteers who enjoy working with the public and who are comfortable talking to families of all ages and backgrounds.
What’s involved?
We have provided two examples of the tasks you might do as a Family Events Volunteer, first at a large family event and then at a small family event. Your role will vary depending on the type and scale of the event.
In this role at a LARGE FAMILY EVENT you will:
- THE DAY BEFORE: Helping to set up the event; setting up the activities and performance areas, stalls, signage, gazebos, barriers etc
AND/OR
- ON THE DAY: Welcoming visitors and answering questions; stewarding and assisting with health and safety; supporting performers and stallholders; processing tickets and collecting evaluation; preparing refreshments for the team; car park marshal, supporting fundraising, ensuring the event spaces stay clean and tidy, helping to deliver craft stations or simple activities; helping to clear up and pack down the event.
- Welcoming family and adult visitors of all ages and backgrounds, treating everyone with dignity and respect.
In this role at a SMALL FAMILY EVENT you will:
- THE DAY BEFORE/ IN THE MORNING: Helping to set up the event; setting up the materials for the activities, signage, tables and chairs.
AND/OR
- ON THE DAY: Welcoming visitors and answering questions; stewarding and assisting with health and safety; processing tickets and collecting evaluation; ensuring the event spaces stay clean and tidy, helping to deliver craft stations; helping to clear up the activity stations.Welcoming family and adult visitors of all ages and backgrounds, treating everyone with dignity and respect.

We are looking for someone who is:
- Enthusiastic about the Museum and its activities
- Friendly, approachable and welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds
- Patient, calm and able to engage children of all ages from toddler to teen
- Keen to volunteer as part of a team
- In good physical health (stewarding involves sustained standing and some lifting, manual handling training will be provided)
- Reliable and able to provide one reference
- Please note that some events take place inside and some take place outside in the Museum grounds, we are looking for people who are happy to volunteer inside and outside

Sunday 16 March Science Sunday (theme: change and adapt)
Wednesday 9 – Friday 18 April Easter Holiday Havoc (theme: transport)
Wednesday 28 – Friday 30 May Half Term Havoc (theme: space fun)
Sunday 1 June Fun for Kids in Space
Sunday 6 July Essex Faery Fayre
Wednesday 23 July – Sun 1 August Summer Holiday Havoc (theme: Friends of the Forest)
Fridays 3, 10, 17 and 31 October Astaria Candlelit Illuminations
Wednesday 29 – Friday 31 October Spooky Halloween and Half Term Havoc
You will have a named contact from the Museum team to support you, this is Debbie Thomas, the Museum Manager.
