This Power Trail investigates the role of water in our lives, particularly the provision of clean water to our homes. The Museum of Power is housed in an old water pumping station and some of the pumping machinery and engines are on display, and in working order.
Focus on water as a source of infection and disease. You could focus on England in the C19th – cholera, typhoid, etc, in the new industrial cities, and their devastating impact on health. Or you could focus on water-borne diseases in the underdeveloped world – water blindness, and such like – that can very easily be cured.
The Power Trail focuses firmly on water consumption rather than cleanliness.
You could also focus on the question of ‘ownership.’ Who ‘owns’ water – no-one, it falls straight from the sky! – therefore why should we pay such high costs for water and water supply? Should it be free to everyone? That makes a good citizenship debate!
